World Series: Rays Extend Life with 12-Inning Victory

Tampa Bay Rays manager Kevin Cash watched his team complete a 4-3 victory in twelve innings on Tuesday, a result that kept the club alive in the World Series. The win snapped a losing streak and forced a fifth game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The series began at American Family Field, where the Brewers took the first two contests. The action then moved to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Tampa Bay dropped the first home game, falling behind 3-1 in the best-of-seven sequence. Tuesday night's contest broke that pattern as the visitors failed to close out the host team.

The Rays stopped the Brewers' eight-game winning run. Milwaukee had been attempting to become only the second team in history to sweep both a league championship series and the World Series. The loss on Tuesday prevented that historic milestone.

History provides little comfort for the Rays. Tampa Bay is just the fifth team in 26 instances to win a fourth game after trailing 3-0 in a World Series. The four previous teams that achieved that feat lost the deciding fifth game. Across all seven-game playoff series, 43 teams have faced a 3-0 deficit. Only the 2004 Boston Red Sox, who defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, ever recovered to win the entire tournament.

The next game is scheduled for Wednesday at 8 p.m. Eastern time at Tropicana Field. Jacob Misiorowski, a favorite for the National League Cy Young Award, is slated to start for the Brewers. The outcome of this contest will determine whether the series goes to a potential seventh game.

The Rays now hold a 2-3 deficit in the series. The team must win Wednesday's game to remain in the competition. The stadium in St. Petersburg will host the next contest as both clubs prepare for the final scheduled date of the current week.
