AI Startup Valuation Hits 965 Billion, Boosting Backer Wealth to Billions
Investors in the leading AI lab see their private market holdings surge in value ahead of a potential multi-trillion dollar public listing.

Investors in Anthropic are sitting on billions of dollars in unrealized gains as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a public listing this year. At its latest private market valuation of 965 billion dollars, the stakes held by venture capitalists and early backers have already accumulated significant wealth, setting the stage for a potential windfall if the company lists at a valuation of up to 2 trillion dollars.
The financial trajectory of the AI lab has been steep, transforming early commitments into massive assets for its supporters. According to data from PitchBook and reports from Bloomberg, several key players have seen their positions grow substantially since the company's inception. The most notable increase in value has occurred among those who entered at lower valuation milestones, though even late-stage entrants have realized significant returns on their capital.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, represents one of the earliest and most valuable positions in the company. He participated in the Series A round in 2021, when Anthropic was valued at 461 million dollars. That initial entry point has allowed his holdings to appreciate dramatically. Today, Schmidt owns approximately one percent of the company, a stake that is worth nearly 10 billion dollars at the current private valuation.
In contrast, Iconiq made a substantial late-stage investment last year, writing a 6 billion dollar check when the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. Despite entering the market at a high multiple, the investment has grown to a value of 17 billion dollars. Analysts suggest that this position has the potential to double its value again once the company completes its initial public offering.
Menlo Ventures has maintained a long-term commitment to the AI lab, leading the Series D round and investing more than 1 billion dollars in total over time. This sustained capital deployment has resulted in a stake currently valued at 14 billion dollars. The firm's leadership in a major funding round underscores its strategic importance to Anthropic's growth and capital structure.
Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, entered the picture earlier this year when the company's valuation had already reached 380 billion dollars. The firm invested 3 billion dollars to secure approximately one percent ownership. Despite the high entry price, the investment has more than doubled in value, reflecting the rapid appreciation of the AI sector in the current market environment.
Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, took a smaller initial position in the 2023 Series C round by investing 35 million dollars. The firm subsequently added another 400 million dollars to its commitment. While the exact current value of the stake is described as being in the billions, the total capital deployed highlights the firm's confidence in the company's long-term prospects. Kutcher has since departed Sound Ventures to launch his own venture capital firm this year.
Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic among venture capital firms. The firm invested 75 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round, a time when the company was valued at 5 billion dollars. That early position has expanded more than ninetyfold, reaching a current value of 7 billion dollars. This growth rate illustrates the outsized returns available to investors who secured positions at lower valuation tiers.
The impending public listing is expected to solidify these gains for all stakeholders. While the private market has already rewarded early and mid-stage investors with significant appreciation, the IPO is anticipated to provide liquidity and potentially higher valuations. As the company moves toward a public debut, the market will closely watch how these billions in paper wealth translate into realized returns for its backers.
