The Milwaukee Brewers enter the 2027 season as the top-ranked team in an early power ranking, retaining their position after winning the 2026 World Series. The club finished the 2026 regular season with a 103-59 record, the best in baseball. Their roster features a young core of players aged 24 or younger, including Jacob Misiorowski, Logan Henderson, and Jackson Chourio. Chourio is signed through 2033, while Cooper Pratt and Luis Lara are under contract through 2035. The team also has depth in the minors, with Jesus Made and Andrew Fischer listed as high-impact prospects for the next season.
The Detroit Tigers occupy the seventh spot in the rankings, a substantial rise from their 20th place finish in 2026. This upward movement reflects a strong run differential of plus-71, which ranked fourth in the American League. The organization is building around young performers like Kevin McGonigle, who recorded 7.1 wins above replacement as a rookie, and Max Clark. The Tigers also have a stable pitching staff, with Troy Melton, Jackson Jobe, and River Ryan ready to fill rotation spots left open by the departure of Tarik Skubal.
The Los Angeles Dodgers sit in second place, supported by the confirmed return of Shohei Ohtani. President of baseball operations Andrew Friedman stated that he expects Ohtani to pitch in 2027 after ruling out knee or arm surgery. The franchise faces a decision regarding the free agency of pitcher Tarik Skubal, though the team has been losing offensive output, scoring more than 100 fewer runs since 2023. The Dodgers will need to manage their roster around aging veterans Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts while integrating young outfielder Josue De Paula.
The New York Yankees rank fifth, led by a starting rotation that includes Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, and Carlos Rodon. The team has committed $218 million to just seven players, limiting significant roster changes. Manager Aaron Boone will return for a tenth season, a decision owner Hal Steinbrenner justified by stating, "The players didn't live up to their end of the bargain in the playoffs." The Yankees will look to re-sign relievers David Bednar and Paul Blackburn while relying on Aaron Judge and second-year players George Lombard Jr. and Spencer Jones for offensive production.
The Boston Red Sox hold the fifth position in the rankings, a team that reached the postseason in both of the last two years but failed to advance past the wild-card round. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has constructed a roster focused on starting pitching and defense. The team has a strong prospect in Franklin Arias, who is projected to replace Trevor Story at shortstop. Roman Anthony, who missed most of 2026 with a finger injury, is expected to return as a key offensive threat alongside a healthy Garrett Crochet.
The 2027 offseason is expected to be complicated by a labor dispute, as the collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1. Teams may see a rush of free agent signings in November before a potential lockout begins. The current rankings account for these financial uncertainties while evaluating existing rosters and incoming talent. The Milwaukee Brewers remain the standard bearers, with their championship roster intact and a pipeline of young players poised to maintain their competitive edge into the next season.
