Nick Saban stated on Friday that the potential loss of a starting position serves as a powerful motivator for Arch Manning. The former Alabama head coach, speaking on ESPN, suggested that the threat of not being entitled to the job could keep the Texas quarterback focused for the remainder of the season.

Manning's performance has been inconsistent for the Longhorns this year. In both of Texas's losses, the quarterback made critical errors in the fourth quarter that shifted the momentum of the games. Against Ole Miss, Manning committed a similar mistake while the score was tied, though Texas ultimately escaped defeat.

Saban, who is known for his willingness to change lineups, cited his 2018 decision to bench Jalen Hurts in favor of Tua Tagovailoa at halftime of the national title game against Georgia. He noted that the move helped secure a memorable comeback victory for the Crimson Tide. "I always say the bench is a pretty good motivator, especially if the guy's a great competitor, which I think Arch is," Saban said.

Saban believes head coach Steve Sarkisian has already communicated this expectation to the player. "Sark made it very clear when he had a meeting with Arch and said to him, 'Look, we can't win with this guy,'" Saban recalled. He acknowledged that making such a change with a high-profile player who has shown flashes of capability is a difficult decision for any coach.

The Longhorns currently hold the No. 11 ranking with a 5-2 record. Backup quarterback KJ Lacey has seen limited action this season and has not yet faced the complexity of live SEC competition to the same extent as Tagovailoa did under Saban's leadership. Saban warned that if Manning does not play with greater consistency, Sarkisian may keep the backup option in reserve.

Texas plays Mississippi State on Saturday. The team then enters a demanding November schedule that includes trips to ranked opponents Missouri and LSU. The season concludes with home games against Arkansas and Texas A&M.

Winning all remaining games would likely secure a spot in the College Football Playoff and another SEC Championship appearance. A 4-1 record over the final five games leaves the team's fate dependent on the overall resume and the final decisions of the selection committee, which releases its top 25 ranking on Tuesday night.
