Cedrick Frazier has secured the position of Hennepin County attorney, defeating former acting U.S. Attorney Anders Folk in a tightly contested election. Unofficial results show Frazier received 8,300 more votes than Folk, a margin of less than two percentage points out of more than 500,000 ballots cast.
The victory makes Frazier the first African American to hold the county attorney seat. He previously served as a DFL state representative and worked as a public defender. His legal background also includes roles as an attorney for Minneapolis Public Schools and a labor attorney for the state teachers’ union, Education Minnesota.
“I will work every single day to uphold equal justice and strengthen public safety,” Frazier said in a statement.
During the campaign, Frazier prioritized addressing gun violence and youth crime. He advocated for expanded crime prevention efforts and increased alternatives to incarceration.
Frazier will assume office after the current holder, Mary Moriarty, leaves the position. Moriarty decided not to seek re-election after completing her first term in the role.
The race concluded with Frazier claiming the seat that oversees criminal prosecutions in the county, ending a period of leadership transition following Moriarty's decision to step down.
