Brighton and Hove Albion play Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET, with the match streaming on Paramount+. Betting odds list City as favorites at -150, while the draw sits at +300 and Brighton is offered at +320.
The visitors arrive in strong form, holding the third position in the Premier League table. Brighton possess the division's best attack and its third-best defense, resulting in a goal difference of plus-16. Manchester City currently sit next on that metric with a plus-11 difference. Brighton also secured a 3-0 victory over Arsenal earlier this season.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler has managed the squad effectively despite significant summer departures. Danny Welbeck, the previous season's leading scorer, and Jan Paul van Hecke, the leader in league minutes, both left the club. Wingers Kaoru Mitoma and Yankuba Minteh have missed games due to injury. Hurzeler has responded by moving Maxim De Cuyper permanently to left back and integrating new signings like Charalampos Kostoulas and Diego Gomez. Veteran Pascal Gross, 35, has contributed four assists and three goals in the league.
Brighton's performance is backed by specific statistical advantages. The team leads the league in counterattacking goals, goals from corners, and shots from outside the box. They allow opponents just 7.6 passes per defensive action, a figure matched only by Manchester City. However, the sample size remains small with only eight games played. Brighton also benefited from having a numerical advantage in two matches against Aston Villa and Coventry, accounting for more than 10% of their data.
Defensive metrics present some caveats. Brighton have conceded 11.4 expected goals, benefiting from strong shot-stopping by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen. They allow the third-highest expected goals per shot in the division, partly due to set-piece vulnerabilities. Their 23 goals significantly exceed their 16.2 expected goals, with recent wins relying on long-range strikes from Gross and Kostoulas.
A victory on Wednesday would place Brighton two points behind the league leaders, assuming Arsenal does not extend their lead. The result will serve as a key indicator of the club's standing in the Premier League and its potential for a European spot.
