The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has committed $750 million to a new hospital project, a sum cited by officials as one of the largest gifts ever made to a U.S. university. This funding underpins the launch of UT Dell Medicine, a consolidated academic medical system that unifies all university health services under a single brand. The move creates a centralized structure for clinical care, education, and research across the Austin region.

The consolidation process began with the establishment of the Dell Medical School, which officials describe as the anchor for the new system. Previously known as UT Health Austin, the university's clinical practice is now rebranded to fall under the UT Dell Medicine umbrella. This structural change aligns existing specialty clinics with the incoming hospital infrastructure. The foundation's contribution specifically targets the construction of the Dell Medical Center, which serves as the operational core of the expansion.

The new system is designed to address rising medical demand in a growing metropolitan area. Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, UT’s executive vice president for medical affairs, stated that the new facility will add cardiovascular, cancer, neurological, and transplant care to the current roster. These additions join existing services in orthopedics, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, pulmonology, and urology. Lucchinetti noted that patients with complex conditions currently struggle to coordinate care across different practices and hospitals.

Dr. John Zerwas, chancellor of the UT System, emphasized the rarity of the opportunity to build an academic health enterprise from the ground up. He stated that the combined system prepares the university for mounting medical needs. The Dell Medical Center will also partner with MD Anderson Cancer Center to provide local access to advanced oncology treatments. The facility will incorporate artificial intelligence and advanced computing to support prevention, diagnosis, and treatment protocols.

The hospital is scheduled to open in 2030. Upon full operation, university officials project that the facility will effectively triple the number of patients the system can serve. This capacity increase is intended to reduce fragmentation in patient care. The integration of technology and new specialty services aims to provide a coordinated team approach for complex medical cases.

The announcement marks the final step in rebranding the university's medical operations. All existing clinics and the new hospital will operate under the UT Dell Medicine name. The system links the educational mission of the medical school directly with the clinical practice. This unified structure is set to launch in parallel with the construction of the new campus.

The Dell Medical Center will serve as the primary site for the new specialty care services. The foundation's gift covers the physical construction of the facility. The 2030 opening date remains the target for full operational status. The consolidation brings all medical entities under a single administrative and brand identity.
