Carson Hocevar will not race in 35 of the 35 races on the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series schedule, a gap of one event that determines whether his first postseason appearance ends with a podium finish or a missed opportunity. Spire Motorsports suspended the No. 77 driver for the Nov. 8 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, a decision announced on Tuesday that removes him from the final weekend of competition.
The suspension follows a dispute at the Nov. 1 race at Martinsville Speedway, where observers accused Hocevar of intentionally spinning his car to trigger a caution flag. The incident was one of several aggressive moves during a season that also saw a physical altercation with Austin Cindric and a viral brawl at Bristol Motor Speedway in September. The team stated that while NASCAR could have handled the penalty, the organization chose to act internally to maintain its standards.
Spire Motorsports owner Jeff Dickerson and the team leadership cited organizational integrity as the primary factor in the decision. In a statement, the team noted that the easy path would have been to leave the penalty to NASCAR, but the group believed the issue was about respect rather than financial gain or points. The statement acknowledged that the correct choice for a valued team member can be painful in the short term.
Hocevar, 23, accepted the suspension in a written response, describing the announcement as an embarrassing day. He admitted to crossing the line with his on-track behavior, stating that his actions left Dickerson and the team with no alternative but to replace him for the weekend. He acknowledged letting down the individuals who provided him with the opportunity to drive a Cup car.
Justin Haley, a NASCAR veteran and former Spire driver, will take the wheel of the No. 77 entry for the Homestead race. Hocevar entered the final event sitting 12th in the points standings. His 2026 season included a victory at Talladega Superspeedway on April 26, 12 top-10 finishes, and six top-five results in 35 starts. The suspension ends his campaign before the final points are tallied, leaving his season record static until Haley completes the race.
The decision reflects a team strategy that values long-term organizational culture over immediate statistical gains. By resting their star driver for the final event, Spire Motorsports signals that consistency and respect are weighted as heavily as race results in their evaluation of personnel. Hocevar’s season, which saw him rise to popularity through aggressive driving and charisma, concludes with a benching rather than a finish.
