Angels GM Search: On Pause Until MLB Approves Sale
Interim GM John Mozeliak says the team will not interview new candidates until Stan Kroenke's group receives formal league approval, a vote not currently scheduled for next month.

The Los Angeles Angels have paused their search for a new general manager, a decision that leaves the franchise without a permanent leader of baseball operations until Major League Baseball votes on the team's sale. Interim GM John Mozeliak confirmed on Wednesday that the hiring process is on hold pending that approval.
Mozeliak initially believed the league would vote during the owners meetings in New York from Nov. 17 to Nov. 19. However, a major league source stated that the sale is not currently on the agenda for that vote. While the item could be added later or handled remotely, no such action is expected at this time.
Stan Kroenke’s group agreed to purchase the Angels from Arte Moreno on Sept. 1. The deal was expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, but financial completion and league approval are separate steps. Mozeliak said he expects Kroenke Sports & Entertainment to take over most decision-making authority once the league gives the final sign-off.
The Angels fired GM Perry Minasian in June and hired Mozeliak as an interim replacement. He has managed the draft and the trade deadline while overseeing the search for a successor. He remains under contract through December, though he noted that his specific role in the final hiring process has not been fully defined.
Kroenke is known for providing financial resources and operational autonomy, making the Angels position a highly sought-after role in the industry. Speculation suggests the new owner may target a current GM from another team. However, Mozeliak said the Angels have not yet requested permission to interview any incumbent general managers.
The team faces a tight timeline before the expected lockout on Dec. 1, which will freeze most roster moves. Mozeliak will attend the GM Meetings in Las Vegas next week to gather information on the free agent and trade markets. He described the team as actively engaged in the six-year free agent class while they determine the strategic direction under the new ownership.
Mozeliak said it is unlikely that major moves will be made before Kroenke takes control. He added that while the current situation is in limbo, his responsibility is to understand the available options from a big-picture standpoint so the organization can act when the leadership transition is complete.
