David Morton, CEO of the MAC Group, was hospitalized Thursday with gunshot wounds after three armed men attacked him and two other family members inside his Toronto home.
The break-in occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m. in the Bridle Path neighborhood. Police said the suspects forced their way through a back entrance of the five-bedroom property. They entered wearing masks and dark clothing while wielding guns and a hammer.
The intruders moved to the second floor and confronted Morton, his wife Doriana Morton, and their two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina Morton. Toronto Police Service Inspector Kristy Smith stated that the suspects made a demand for valuables from within the home. Whether the men escaped with items remains uncertain.
Morton and his daughters, ages 28 and 26, attempted to fight off the attackers when gunfire erupted. All three sustained gunshot wounds. In a separate statement issued Friday, Morton disclosed that all four family members were also struck by the suspects with a hammer. He confirmed that he and his two daughters remained hospitalized on Friday, though he did not specify their medical conditions.
"What should have been the safety and security of our own home became a terrifying and life-threatening experience," Morton said in his statement. He added that the trauma of the event was difficult to articulate because it occurred in the place where people should feel safest.
The three suspects, all believed to be in their 20s, fled the scene in an SUV. A search for the armed men is currently underway. Cecil Hawkins, a former resident of Bridle Path, noted that homes in the area typically have strong security measures. He described the shooting inside the house as surprising and mind-boggling.
Toronto police data shows 119 home invasions have occurred so far in 2026. That number represents a 32.2% increase over the same period last year. The incident took place in the same neighborhood where a mansion belonging to rapper Drake was targeted in multiple break-in attempts in May 2024. A security guard for Drake was shot outside that home during the earlier incidents.
