Senator Chris Murphy is in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, began feeling numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game on Saturday afternoon. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, confirmed the incident in a written statement on Sunday. Medical staff at a local hospital diagnosed the stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring. Herwitt said the 53-year-old senator is responding well to treatment and expects a full recovery.

Murphy has played a high-profile role in the current midterm election cycle. He frequently campaigns for Democratic candidates. He is also viewed as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential nomination. In recent weeks, he returned from a tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would escalate military action against Iran after the midterms.

The senator's health crisis fits a pattern of medical issues affecting members of Congress this year. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky missed months of work due to a long hospital stay and rehabilitation. Representative Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for several months while receiving treatment for depression.

In 2022, three prominent Democrats also faced stroke-related hospitalizations. Those individuals were Senator Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-candidate John Fetterman. Each required medical intervention for the condition.
