Jordanian security forces secured a foothold in the village of Hammoud at dawn on Monday, capturing three men linked to a deadly attack on a Greek Orthodox church.
The suspects were taken into custody following a shootout in Karak governorate, south of Amman. All three men sustained injuries during the operation, while no security personnel were hurt. The initial assault occurred on Friday while a funeral service was underway at the church in the same village.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed the arrests via a phone interview with the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka. He stated that the security services fulfilled their duties by capturing those responsible for the act. Al-Faraya noted that the suspects offered fierce resistance before being subdued, adding that they had been identified early in the investigation. He described the men as having used all available means to evade capture until the raid.
The Public Security Directorate released a statement asserting that terrorism has no place in society and that the men met their just fate. The directorate did not name the suspects or link them to specific Islamist militant groups. Reuters reported that the ministry emphasized the finality of the suspects' situation without providing further tactical details.
King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against what he called the outlaws of Islam. He urged officials to protect the unity of the Jordanian people from those seeking to undermine it. The attack remains the latest security incident in a region home to a small Christian minority.
