Kylie Arellano was held captive for 500 days before law enforcement agents rescued her from a home in Oregon on November 1. The 17-year-old disappeared from Garden City, Utah, on May 29, 2025, at age 15. Federal prosecutors have charged Adam Hunter Harmel, 39, with her capture. The case details a prolonged period of isolation and violence that ended only after Arellano contacted another minor through the online game Among Us.
Court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah on November 2 describe the conditions of her confinement. The federal complaint alleges that Harmel confined Arellano to the basement of his Huntington, Oregon, residence. The two shared a single bed in that space. Prosecutors state that Harmel repeatedly assaulted the teenager. To obscure her physical appearance, he allegedly used pliers to remove her dental braces. The complaint further alleges that he sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions during 2025 and 2026.
Harmel took specific steps to prevent escape. He kept a knife under his pillow and instructed Arellano to sleep against the wall. Investigators noted that he expressed a desire to start a family with the minor. A housemate at the Oregon property told the FBI that Harmel claimed to have brought home a new girlfriend from Utah. The housemate did not see Arellano for approximately two months after her arrival.
The capture began online. An affidavit from FBI Special Agent Andrea Elder indicates that grooming started on gaming platforms in 2025 before moving to other social media apps. A law enforcement source stated that Harmel met Arellano on Snapchat. He allegedly claimed to have a hip disability and offered her money to travel to Oregon. Harmel drove from Oregon to Perry, Utah, to pick her up on May 29, 2025. He threw her phone into a river in Logan Canyon immediately after she entered the vehicle. He then drove her to his home and told her she was not allowed to leave.
Arellano’s mother had searched for her daughter since finding the girl's jacket in the driveway and discovering her phone was off. The search concluded in mid-October 2026 when Arellano connected with another minor in Among Us. She moved the conversation to a different app and revealed her identity. She explained that she was being held against her will and believed police had stopped searching. Her mother contacted the FBI. Agents monitored a video call on November 1 where Arellano showed them the knife and other evidence.
Oregon State Police and federal agents executed the rescue on November 1. A search of the residence uncovered knives, BB guns, and sexual lubricant. Harmel was arrested during a traffic stop in Ontario, Oregon. He was scheduled to make his initial appearance in federal court on Wednesday. U.S. Attorney Melissa Holyoak stated that the priority was the safe return of the minor victim. FBI Director Kash Patel warned that the agency would relentlessly investigate those who exploit children.
