A Russian drone strike killed Canadian volunteer Jesse Adams in Donetsk Oblast on October 25.
Adams was transporting animals from the frontline settlement of Kramatorsk when the attack occurred. The impact hit the vehicle's windscreen, causing severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery and resuscitation efforts. Medical staff were unable to save him.
Adams founded the RainCoast Dog Rescue Society, a group dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals. While in Ukraine, he assisted residents of frontline areas and coordinated the evacuation of pets from conflict zones. His work involved loading animals into vehicles for transport to safer regions or for adoption into new families.
In a post shared days before his death, Adams noted that volunteers had rescued 80 dogs and cats in Kramatorsk in a single day. He described the animals as innocent victims of the war, noting that many owners had been killed or evacuated. He called it an honor to help the animals reach a better life or be adopted.
The Animal Rescue Kharkiv community confirmed his death and stated that hundreds of animals are alive today because of his work. They described him as a kind and compassionate person who worked alongside them in challenging conditions. The group expressed gratitude for his courage and the lives he helped save.
Adams was the second animal rescue volunteer killed in the region this year. In July, Olha Kuzmenko died in Druzhkivka when a guided aerial bomb struck the city. Both volunteers operated in Donetsk Oblast, a key area of active combat and drone activity.
The strike on Adams occurred while the animals were already loaded into the vehicle. The drone was an FPV model, a type of first-person view drone commonly used for precise attacks on vehicles and personnel in the current conflict.
