The Central Elections Committee declared on Sunday that the recent Knesset election results remain valid regardless of ongoing probes into foreign interference.
The decision follows a joint announcement by the committee and security authorities. Justice Noam Sohlberg, the committee chairman, stated that substantiated suspicions of interference would not change the vote's integrity or the final outcome. The statement was issued jointly with the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, and the Attorney-General.
The investigation began after reports emerged regarding financial transfers to a member of the Joint List. This coalition includes the Arab parties Hadash, Ta'al, and Balad. The specific individual has not yet been named. The Shin Bet is examining whether thousands of shekels from Qatar were used for campaign financing or election bribery. Investigators have not yet determined how the funds were spent or identified the specific evidence linking the money to Qatar. Broader suspicions suggest that foreign entities, potentially including Turkey, may have funneled money to influence Arab community voting.
Sohlberg emphasized that the current findings do not imply the votes cast by the Arab community were invalid. He clarified that the investigation's purpose is to verify facts without casting aspersions on the electorate. The committee requested that the formal investigation be opened on Thursday.
The timeline for the inquiry is now set. The Shin Bet has begun its review of the suspected financial transfers. The Central Elections Committee will maintain its stance that the election outcome stands unless new evidence emerges. The next step involves the formal opening of the investigation as scheduled for Thursday.
