The A1(M) motorway saw a rare disruption today when a single Warburtons delivery lorry dumped thousands of loaves of bread onto the tarmac. The incident occurred just after 5:10 a.m. near the Bowburn junction in Durham. This specific volume of scattered goods created a debris field that blocked traffic flow immediately.

The orange HGV crashed through the central reservation and tipped fully onto its side. As the vehicle overturned, it shed its load of supermarket crates loaded with white toast. These crates broke apart, leaving countless individual loaves strewn across both the eastbound and westbound carriageways. The physical barrier of bread made normal driving impossible for the duration of the cleanup.

Durham Constabulary confirmed the timeline of events in a statement. Officers arrived shortly after the 5:10 a.m. call to find the lorry overturned just past the Bowburn junction. The force noted that the spillage across both directions of travel forced a total closure of the road at that point. This initial closure set the stage for the delays that followed.

The driver of the lorry was injured in the collision. Police transported the individual to a hospital for treatment. National Highways coordinated the recovery effort, which required bringing a massive crane to the scene. The crane lifted the HGV back to an upright position. Workers then had to manually scrape the baked goods off the road surface.

The closure affected commuters between junctions J60 and J61. Because the motorway was shut in both directions, rush hour traffic faced hours of misery. The road remained closed this afternoon due to the scale of the damage. Temporary barrier repairs are still underway, and traffic delays continue to form in both directions.

This event adds to a recent list of unusual road hazards in the UK. Last month, a lorry spilled 300 litres of diesel on the M3 in Hampshire. In 2022, an HGV in Lewisham, south London, crashed into a bridge and released a large quantity of toilet roll onto the road. These incidents show how everyday goods can cause major infrastructure issues when released in bulk.
