Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist and primary songwriter for the rock band Journey, is reconsidering his decision to retire from touring. Although the band is currently on its Final Frontier Tour, which was originally promoted as a farewell, Cain admits he is open to continuing due to the intense reaction from audiences.
Cain, 76, initially planned to step back after this run of shows. He told reporters in February that he wanted to celebrate the group's legacy and the fans who supported them for decades. He described the touring lifestyle as a grind and felt it was time to conclude this chapter of his career.
However, the reception during the current tour has changed his perspective. Speaking by phone from Louisville, Cain noted that the turnout has been overwhelming. He described the connection with the audience as a love affair. While he is focusing on finishing the tour, he says the group will take a rest and reassess its future.
The Final Frontier Tour is scheduled to conclude on November 28 in San Francisco, where the band formed in 1973. Journey has one confirmed date in 2027, an April 27 performance at the Stagecoach Festival in Indio, California, which serves as a makeup show for a weather-canceled appearance this year.
Beyond fan support, Cain cites a repaired personal relationship with co-founder Neal Schon as a factor in his reconsideration. The two musicians had public disputes in the past, but their wives facilitated a renewed dialogue during the tour. Cain stated that they now agree on most issues and are transparent about their goals. He emphasized that he did not want their 45-year working relationship to end on a negative note.
Cain also noted that frontman Arnel Pineda, who has led the band since 2007, appears to be enjoying the performances, although he was initially reluctant to commit to the farewell tour. Pineda takes vocal breaks during shows, allowing Cain, drummer Deen Castronovo, and keyboardist Jason Derlatka to handle lead vocals for portions of the set.
Looking ahead, Cain plans to take a year off to focus on his personal life and his solo work in contemporary Christian music. He released a series of albums and EPs starting in 2016. His next single, a song about the Nativity titled Upon a Night Diving, is due for release in early December. He is also working on a full album planned for release next year.
Journey will perform its next concert at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Monday, November 2, at 7:30 p.m. The venue is located at 2645 Woodward Avenue.
